EYG founder shortlisted for prestigious 'Judges Award' category in regional awards
16th May 2023
EYG’s founder James Bingham has today been shortlisted for a special award to recognise his contribution to business in Hull over five decades.
James, who founded EYG 52 years ago, is a finalist in the Judges Recognition category of the People in Business Awards 2023.
The submission read: “James established EYG Home Improvements in 1971 from his small terraced house in Hessle, east Yorkshire.
“That business is now a national company, with a total turnover of £650million since its inception.”
This business now has its head office on Wiltshire Road, Hull, just two miles from that original house.
It provides employment for many in the community, and within the surrounding counties after expanding into Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire, with branches in Hull, Lincoln, Spalding, Doncaster, and Scarborough.
The business also has a thriving trade and commercial division, which operates nationwide on projects valued up to £6m.
On receiving the news of his shortlist today, James said: “I didn’t know that anyone had nominated me so this has come as a big surprise, albeit a very nice one.
“When I started EYG, I didn’t ever dream it would become as big as it has, and I am very proud of what everyone has achieved.
“It is lovely to have been shortlisted, but this is thanks to the hard work of everyone who I have worked with past and present and I am grateful to every one of them,” he said.
James is still hands-on in the business, which is run by son-in-law Nick Ward, who is the Managing Director.
Nick added: “Jim started the business with just £200 and over the years has built strong foundations which have allowed us to prosper and grow. I took over 15 years ago, and without those foundations, we would never have been able to achieve what we have as a company.”
The business manufactures everything in-house across its 65,000 sq ft manufacturing facilities at its Hull head office, with the range including windows, doors, conservatories and orangeries, roofs and garden rooms.
The awards ceremony takes place on June 30 at Hull’s Double Tree by Hilton Hotel.
