Sliding sash UPVC windows are perfect match on period property

For Matthew and Victoria Harris from East Yorkshire, who purchased their Edwardian home 12 years ago, the decision to replace their rotting wooden sliding sash windows was one they took very seriously, even searching for two years for the right style of window.

Matthew said: “We bought the house 12 years ago, and the windows weren’t too bad then, but the maintenance was a nightmare, it took three weeks to paint and make repairs, and it needed doing regularly, but it was such an awful job that I hadn’t done it again.

“We knew we wanted UPVC, but we spent two years searching for the right window and company. We went all over Yorkshire looking in showrooms, and we were getting very half-hearted after so long.”

Why did they choose UPVC sliding sash windows?

Matthew said: “We bought the house 12 years ago, and the windows weren’t too bad then, but the maintenance was a nightmare, it took three weeks to paint and make repairs, and it needed doing regularly, but it was such an awful job that I hadn’t done it again.

"We knew we wanted UPVC and not wood, because of the maintenance. But we really wanted a similar finish to the wooden windows.”

What did we do?

We arranged a survey and to inspect the original internal woodwork to plan how we could sympathetically replace the original cills and surrounding woodwork, which was cracked and rotting.

The installation went without a hitch, and our experienced joiners worked carefully to match the old woodwork when re-creating the ornate internal woodwork, including the cills.

Matthew added: “The two guys who fitted the windows were machines, the windows flew in. The woodwork was flawless, you honestly can’t tell it’s UPVC and it looks exactly as it did before."

How did it go?

“They have made a big difference to the noise levels, when it was windy the old windows used to rattle like crazy, and they were single glazed so we would get draughts and condensation all the time, which has all gone now.

“They’ve made such a difference to the overall appearance of the house.

“The experience with EYG was brilliant, the end product is perfection. The windows don’t look like UPVC at all, the woodwork inside was a perfect match to the original, and we’re really happy with them.

"We would happily recommend using EYG, “ he added.
